PEI International Shellfish Festival Prince Edward Island International Shellfish Festival

Historic Charlottetown Waterfront, PEI, Canada
September 15 - 17, 2006

The Prince Edward Island International Shellfish Festival began in 1996 and has grown into one of the largest festivals in Atlantic Canada. The Festival takes place annually the third weekend in September.

As a joint effort of the PEI Aquaculture Alliance and the PEI Shellfish Association, the Festival is best described as a "Great Big Kitchen Party", appealing to a very broad base of visitors and Islanders, with activities and entertainment to suit all ages.

Great musical acts continue to wow the audience, with first class Maritime entertainers including East Coast Music Award Winner, Richard Wood being among those scheduled to appear at this year's festival.

While lively music is an important ingredient, every successful Island Kitchen Party also needs great food. Tempt your taste buds with scrumptious seafood chowder, freshly steamed PEI Mussels & Clams and renowned PEI Oysters. These Island delicacies are served up daily in the festival tent.

For those serious about seafood chowder, the festival hosts the Paderno PEI Chowder Championship, and the Milk International Chowder Championship. Festival goers will not want to miss the chance to sample these unique chowder dishes as they are served up during each challenge.

If it is oysters you are searching for, be sure to attend the Raspberry Point PEI Oyster Shucking Championship and J.P.'s Shellfish Eastern Canadian Oyster Shucking Championship. Competitors from across the Island and Eastern Canada will amaze the crowd with their skill and speed as they compete against some of the best shuckers in the world. Or try your hand at shucking oysters at the Keep on Shucking with Frank’s Red Hot® Oyster Shucking Demos taking place daily on the festival grounds and at select downtown restaurants.

There is sure to be something for everyone at this year’s Prince Edward Island International Shellfish Festival. From gourmet chefs to celebrity cooks; first time oyster tasters to world-class oyster shuckers, the festival should promises to entertain and educate people of all ages.

Other festival weekend highlights include the Go Deep International Tie One On Mussel Competition, the International PEI Shellfish Chef Challenge, The World is Your Oyster free children’s program, the Atlantic Veterinary College Marine Touch Tank, Peake’s Wharf Boat Cruises with guided tours and shellfish sampling, chef demonstrations by The Culinary Institute of Canada and much more.
